Letter B: B is for bear: Paper Plate Bear and other resources

Our books for the day was "Where's My Teddy" by Jez Alborough and "We're Going On a Bear Hunt" by Michael Rosen although this craft could be used with any bear story.

Instructions for how to make our paper plate bear came from the Making Learning Fun site here.

Our Bear tracer page came from the Making Learning Fun too.

Once we had finished we wrote it all up in our summer journal.

Letter B: B is for Bob the builder: size sort

In the quest for free printable resources I came across this offering from Tired,Need Sleep.  There are 12 vechicles from the Bob the Builder programmes each with a big, little and medium version.

I think this was a bit overwhelming for B to be presented with so many in one go so when I use these again I will probably limit it to 3 or 4 named vechicles, having so many in the file does mean we will be able to vary it from time to time though!

Letter B: B is for butterfly: Size sort

Another freebie from Confessions of a Homeschooler - this time just three sizes, sort the game pieces onto the correct column on the game board.  Click here for a whole page of butterfly related activities, scroll down for the size sort.

Letter B: b is for BIG: Magnifying Glass Matching Game

B found one of our magnifying glasses this week and has been constantly wandering around with it glued to one eye.  I wanted something for our "big and little" theme so when I found this cute matching game via this post at Attached Mama that used a magnfying glass I knew it was the one for me.
The idea is pretty self explanatory - examine the little pictures with the magnifying glass and match to the bigger pictures.  There are basically three themes covered, animals, transport and fruit so you could separate them into themes and make three separate file folder games if you wanted to.
Needless to say B loved it!

Letter B: B is for beans

We did quite a lot of things on the B is for beans theme whilst the bigger kids had their halfday of school on Wednesday.
1.We stuck beans on a B.  Good for fine motor skills.

We used a glue stick for this one as I know B likes to use this as it is the glue used most often by the bigger kids - not today though as you can see from the number of beans we actually managed to get onto the paper.
2.We counted the beans and stuck them on.

This was more successful as I put dots of PVA glue onto the paper and B matched the beans to the dots.  Then I made the mistake of getting him to count them "Not counting" is the favourite chant we get whenever we do this.  Yep I have a 2 year old who can recognise most of the lowercase alphabet but can't count to 10!
3.We made a bean sensory box.  Biggest hit of the lot but we were going for a mini-meltdown by this point so no images.  You know what a sensory box looks like anyway right?
4.We used two types, beans and lentils, and (tried) to sort them into big and little.  B just wanted to use the bowl with them in like another sensory box activity so we went with the flow.

Some days you just have to pick your battles ;)
When we had finished R noticed this pattern on one of the beans - all totally natural, no cheating I promise!

Letter B: B is for buttons: Sensory Tub and Pouring

We practised pouring play buttons from container to container and just running our fingers through the pile.
We also tried grouping them according to colour but B was not interested in this today.
Although he did discover that they felt good when he pushed them round the floor with his feet as well.

Sensory Bottles: shake rattle and roll

R decided to make her own set of shaker bottles and raided the kitchen to make these three amongst others. Each makes a different kind of noise due to the different sizes of the "filling" and R and A enjoyed ranking them from highest to lowest (I am sure more will follow in the same vein), B just enjoyed making as much noise as possible running round with one in each hand and shouting "Noisy!" at the top of his voice. Lots of fun but don't forget to pass the ear plugs!

Sensory Bottles: Discovery Bottle

Gather together any toys or charms that are small enough to fit into your chosen bottle and hide them inside something like rice or sand. This one kept B occupied longer than any of the others so far (whereas the older kids like the other bottles better). He was particularly interested in the figure of a snowman which we hid in there and kept saying "Man in rice" and shaking it about until he found it again.
We have just started off with a general assortment of objects but you could do all things to fit a theme; for example all beginning with the same letter, or a set number of things or the same colour or all the same kind of object (e.g. all dinosaurs).
You could have a list of objects to find and check off (either words or pictures for pre-readers)or have them write a list of all the things they find (have a round number so you know when they have got them all).
We didn't seal the lid on this one (hope I don't regret that :) ) as I want to be able to vary it by changing the objects from time to time.

Letter B: B is for bus:Magnet Page

Once again we went to the make learning fun site and used their magnet pages for a do-a-dot activity. We did both dot painting and putting coins in the dots using this page although there are other letter B magnet pages on the site.
Then we had a pretend bus ride with B as the driver. We used a shelving unit that we happened to be building (B's idea I just grabbed the opportunity)and the steering wheel from MarioKart WII. We also made fake tickets and took the bus to the beach talking about what we might see out of the windows along the way. It turned out to be lots of animals so that we could all join in with the animal sounds. The song of the day was of course "The Wheels on the Bus" - what else! Finally we played with a toy bus that you can take the passengers in and out of. Of course if we had wanted to we could have added a field trip taking the bus somewhere as well.
